RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages providing entry to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," he said. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how British military are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
